Welcome to Empoorium

Welcome to Empoorium

You found us. That means something.

Maybe you stumbled in through a search for something strange and beautiful. Maybe a friend sent you a link with a "this is so you" attached. Maybe you've been quietly collecting oddities for years and you just needed to know there was a place that understood. However you got here, welcome. Pull up a chair. Stay a while.

Empoorium is a little hard to explain, and we think that's exactly right.

At its heart, this is a shop built on reverence. Reverence for the strange, the small, the overlooked. For the beetle that spent three years underground before ever seeing the sky. For the butterfly whose wings hold colors that have no business being that beautiful. For the fox who knew every trail through the wood. Every specimen that finds its way into the Empoorium is ethically sourced and handled with intention, because we believe that a life, no matter how small, deserves to be honored rather than forgotten.

The World Beneath Our Feet (and Wings)

One of the things we love most is watching someone encounter an insect up close for the very first time and actually see it. Not flinch, not brush it away, but really look. That moment of recognition, of realizing that something you may have walked past a thousand times is actually extraordinary, is one of the most quietly profound things there is.

Here in North Carolina, we are surrounded by some of the most spectacular insect life in the country. The forests, fields, and creek banks of this state are home to creatures that rival anything you'd find in a tropical rainforest, if you know where to look. Luna moths the size of your hand. Wheel bugs that look like they wandered in from a science fiction novel. Fireflies that pulse in synchronized waves on warm June evenings. Cicadas that spend seventeen years underground, waiting.

We love sharing that wonder, especially with the young people who are still close enough to the ground to notice. Teaching local kids about the insects and creatures that share our corner of the world isn't just about science. It's about building a relationship with the living world around them, one that we hope will last a lifetime.

The Cycle of Things

Everything in the Empoorium tells a story about the cycle of life. The shed skin that means something outgrew itself. The skull that held a whole personality once. The butterfly who lived fully and briefly and left behind something breathtaking. We don't shy away from death here. We think it deserves the same care and curiosity we give to living things.

That belief runs through everything we do. It shows up in the shadowboxes and specimens, in the mystery bundles assembled with intention, in the way we talk about the creatures in our care. Life and death are not opposites in this shop. They are the same story, told in two different voices.

And for those who are sitting with grief, who are navigating loss and looking for ways to hold it, Empoorium exists for you too. There is something quietly healing about holding a piece of the natural world and being reminded that transformation is not the end of the story. It never has been.

Thank You for Being Here.

However long you stay, we are glad you came. Browse slowly. Read the names. Let something find you. That's how it usually works, anyway.

With love and weird bugs,

Empoorium
